American Idiot, the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Broadway musical featuring the music of the multi-platinum Green Day album of the same name, is set for a UK premiere at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre this October.
Described by The New York Times as “The most adventurous musical to brave Broadway in the last decade”, American Idiot follows the story of three boyhood friends each searching for the meaning of life in a post-9/11 world. Following on from its high profile opening in Southampton (something which many will see as one of the key events of the theatre’s 25th anniversary year) the tour will continue to Cardiff, playing at five other venues across the UK and Ireland before closing at London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo.
Written by Green Day lead-singer Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer, the show, which features hit songs including ‘Holiday’ and ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, is currently on a US tour. Earlier this week, the show’s Twitter account confirmed that the touring cast would reprise their roles in the UK with the cast including Alex Nee, Thomas Hettrick and Casey O’Farrell.
The show, which received unanimously positive reviews, is in Southampton from October 9th-13th. As usual, heavy student discounts apply for a range of performances with student special tickets for opening night available for £12.50 from September 9th at the box office.
Broadway musical premieres are by no means a regular event in Southampton. With that in mind, American Idiot promises to be one not to miss.
Green Day’s American Idiot begins its run at The Mayflower on Tuesday 9th October and ends on Saturday 13th October. Tickets can be bought here.
