Two Southampton students have picked up prizes at the Curtain Call Awards, which celebrate amateur dramatics across Hampshire.

Following an impressive 17 nominations across the 37 categories, actors from SUSU Showstoppers and SUSU Theatre Group won in their categories.

Patrick Cahill won the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, for his portrayal of Collins in the SUSU Showstoppers’ performance of Rent. He beat off competition from performers who appeared in productions of Anything Goes and The Nativity.

Third year student Sam Dobson scooped the prestigious Best Actor in a Drama award following his performance as lead character Alan in Equus. The play received a five star review from The Edge when it was performed by SUSU Theatre Group in October.

Over 400 guests attended the sold out event at Grand Harbour Hotel, with the awards being presented by actor John Altman. The 61-year-old, who is well known for playing Nasty Nick in EastEnders, was joined on stage by editors of the Daily Echo to announce the winners.

Last year saw SUSU Showstoppers pick up two Curtain Call Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Musical Director.
