Noel Coward’s comic play Blithe Spirit has been a West End favourite since it hit the stage in the 1940s, and has seen star-studded casts ever since. Names from Twiggy to Rupert Everett to Alison Steadman have taken on Coward’s classic – and hilarious – roles to tell the tale of Charles Condomine (Alex Scotchbrook) who, much to his dismay, accidentally gets the spirit of his late first wife, Elvira (Hayley Baskerville), summoned back to haunt him… and his new wife, Ruth (Anna Williams).
Rob McGough, one of the directors, told us that upon reading the play, “it really did live up to the hype associated with it” and that “the more you dig the more layers of comedy there are!” He promises “a production that fizzes with energy… a genuine comedy classic that everyone should experience!”
Following up from SUSU Theatre Group’s popular farcical performances of 80’s comedy Keeping Down with the Joneses and original Edinburgh hit Hanging Bruce-Howard of Summer 2013, there is no doubt that the laughs in Blithe Spirit will be well within TG’s reach. With a cast made up mostly of fresh, first-year talent, we can expect to see some lively performances of Coward’s play and some TG faces to watch for future productions.
Blithe Spirit will be performed at the Annex Theatre at 7:30pm from the 26th-29th March. Tickets can be bought from the SUSU Box Office and cost £9 for adults, £6 for students or £5 for Performing Arts members.
