University of Southampton’s very own Light Operatic Society (otherwise known as LOpSoc) has picked up a number of awards at this year’s UNIFest competition at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. This year saw LOpSoc crowned as International Champions for their production of Pirates of Penzance.
LOpSoc won a total of five out of the eleven awards, meaning that their final performance of Pirates of Penzance won more awards than any other university society at the festival, which took place in Yorkshire and attracts productions from all around the world.
Current Chairman Thomas Joy, who won Best Musical Director, said: “Not only as Chairman but as LOpSoc’s outgoing Musical Director, I can’t begin to express just how proud I am of the cast and everything they’ve achieved. Our unauditioned chorus is the backbone of our society, and to have a cast from all walks of life, of all performing backgrounds, come together and be declared International Champions just proves testament to their incredible hard work.”
Other winners include Joseph Hand who took home the Male Performer award for his portrayal of Pirate King as well as Richard Patient winning Character Actor for his performance as Sergeant.
The society is the University of Southampton’s oldest performing arts society and will begin auditions for their next show, Iolanthe, on 3rd October.
