The Sound of Music, widely recognised as one of the greatest musicals of all time, comes to Southampton’s
Mayflower theatre from the 21st to the 31st of January as part of its 2015 UK tour.
Based on the 1949 autobiography of Maria von Trapp, the production tells the story of Maria’s relationship with the Von Trapp family against the backdrop of World War Two. The show’s score features classics such as ‘Edelweiss’, ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Do-Re-Mi, Climb’ ‘Ev’ry Mountain’, and of course, the title song, ‘The Sound of Music’.
Danielle Hope, winner of BBC’s Over the Rainbow, who made her professional debut as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at London’s Palladium theatre takes on the iconic role of Maria. Stage and television star Stephen Houghton takes on the role of Captain Von Trapp. The Oliver-Award nominated actor has previously taken on leading roles in Blood Brothers and Grease in addition to a role in Coronation Street.
Speaking to BLK Productions, Hope said: ‘The Sound of Music is one of the most famous, the most cherished and the most loved shows and with that comes a responsibility. Everyone holds [this show]so close to their hearts. It’s a massive role and so many amazing people have played it. I’m really looking forward to singing ‘The Sound of Music’!’
The production is directed by Marton Connor with choreography by Olivier Award winner Bill Deamer. The tour coincides with the 50th anniversary of the film version starring Julie Andrews which became a box office hit on its 1965 release.
Tickets are available now from the Mayflower website.
