Showstoppers flex their big guns as they deploy their well versed and rehearsed veterans to air out the cobwebs as winter wanes. The first Annex Theatre show of 2015, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, will kick off this coming Wednesday, and if you are looking for a musical with a difference, I thoroughly recommend you check it out.
Perhaps not the most well-known musical, this Broadway hit incorporates improvised comedy into its narrative as four audience members are invited to compete alongside the Putnam County spellers. The cool, calm and collected cast cruise through the musical barely breaking a sweat, some of the members clearly showing off their four years’ experience performing musicals in the Annex Theatre.
Director Josh Cox promises the night will be “completely different, unprecedented, and that everyone will have a massive laugh”; I can agree with all three and this light, one-act musical is a perfect post-exam pick-me-up.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will be performed at the Annex Theatre at 8pm from the 4th – 7th February (matinee 2.30pm on the 7th). Student tickets are £6 and can either be bought on the door or reserved here.
