The BBC’s joint venture with Starz may have been dropped by the broadcaster, but that doesn’t mean that the first series isn’t well worth the money for a BluRay copy of the series. Telling the female side of the Wars of the Roses, The White Queen follows the lives of Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville, the spouses and mothers of kings.
The costumes in this period piece are beautiful, with elaborate dresses and male costumes which make it perfect for high definition viewing. The imagery of medieval England is varied and its so refreshing seeing a landscape which isn’t marred by smog. Particular moments which strike the viewer are those in the forest, in the middle of snowy trees where battles rage, and the moments of ‘witchcraft’ which intersperse the series.
This series gives an interesting voice to those who have historically been denied one. This combined with beautiful set pieces and costumes, make The White Queen one to watch.
The White Queen (2013) is released on Blu-ray by Anchor Bay/Starz, Certificate 15.

I wouldn’t have said dropped. After all they did go through three books worth of content in one series, Ms. Gregory has to have the chance to catch up!
