It’s difficult to create a list of acts who will release great music in the next year, without picking those artists that everyone has already heard of. Choosing those musical talents which would make up THE LIST 2014, we acknowledged that these five acts show huge promise for the next 12 months, but are perhaps a little bit too well known to feature!

1. Martin Garrix

17-years-old, 1.5 million Facebook likes, and a UK number one. 2013 was a breakout year for Martin Garrix but while you’d recognise ‘Animals’ in a club, no one really seems to know what else this youngster is capable of. While there doesn’t seem to be any firm plans for an album, Garrix seems to be the electro-house music maestro giving the genre mainstream appeal.

2. Foxes

She’s the Southampton girl who is making big waves in pop music thanks to her powerful vocals and striking image. Foxes kicked off 2013 by featuring on the well-known Zedd track ‘Clarity’, but has gone from strength to strength, touring with Marina & the Diamonds and appearing on Fall Out Boy’s new album. She is set to release her debut album Glorious in March 2014, following on from the success of current single ‘Youth’.

3. Lorde

In the last six months, Lorde has sky-rocketed from a local New Zealand talent, to a teenage superstar. Reaching number one in the UK with ‘Royals’, she also spent nine consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Her album Pure Heroine received rave reviews, and with a string of singles planned to be released in the coming months, things will only continue to get better for this 17-year-old sensation.

4. Sam Smith

Picking up the BRITs Critics’ Choice Award, and being a favourite to top the BBC Sound of 2014 poll too, everything seems to be going well for Sam Smith. Raising his profile by featuring on tracks with Disclosure and Naughty Boy, Smith has become a fairly well known name, despite releasing very little music on his own. This is set to change next year as his single ‘Money On My Mind’ will be released suspiciously close to the BRIT Awards, on 16th February, with an album to follow.

5. Chlöe Howl

A runner up to Sam Smith for the BRIT’s Critics’ Choice Award, Howl is the most unknown act on this list, but still shows plenty of promise. Her bouncy, sentimental music has led to comparisons with Kate Nash and Lily Allen, but the fiery redhead is forging her own path in glittering pop. She will re-release single ‘Rumour’ in the new year, preceding her debut album which she has worked on with Eg White (who has also worked with Adele and Duffy).
