0

With the BAFTA awards broadcasting tonight, and the Oscars only a few weeks away, here at The Edge we are giving you the run down of our choices for the winners in 2014. Film Editor Barnaby tells you who should win the awards, and Culture Editor Rebecca says who probably will win, given the previous award ceremony wins.

The Edge will be following the action as it happens, for both awards, so be sure to check the website for up to date details.

Oscars: Best Picture
The nominees:
American Hustle
The Wolf of Wall Street
Nebraska
Captain Phillips
Philomena
Dallas Buyers Club
12 Years a Slave
Gravity
Her

BAFTA Best Film
12 Years a Slave.
American Hustle.
Captain Phillips.
Gravity.
Philomena

Barnaby: For both ceremonies, Captain Phillips. I think that it is a particularly weak list this year, but if any of them deserve it, it is Paul Greengrass’s furiously intense Captain Phillips.
Rebecca: I think that the Oscar will go to The Wolf of Wall Street, particularly if it doesn’t get the best actor nod. The BAFTA will most likely go to 12 Years a Slave, with its very British roots.

BAFTA: Outstanding British Film
Gravity
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
Philomena
Rush
Saving Mr Banks
The Selfish Giant

Barnaby: Saving Mr Banks. It was robbed of a best picture nomination at both ceremonies, so its should prevail in this category.
Rebecca: I tend to agree with Barnaby here, I think that the awards voters will have this in mind, so Saving Mr Banks seems to be a good bet.

Oscars: Actor in a Leading Role
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyers Club

BAFTA: Male in a Leading Role
Bruce Dern, Nebraska
Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street
Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips

Barnaby: Chiwetel Ejiofor for both awards, as his performance is masterful.
Rebecca: As much as I desperately want this to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year, I think that Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club will win the Oscar, given his SAG award win. Chiwetel Ejiofor in 12 Years A Slave for the BAFTA, because of the award’s traditional bias towards British actors, and his momentum as the ‘rising star’ of the moment.

Oscars: Actress in a Leading Role
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Judi Dench, Philomena
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Meryl Streep, August: Osage County
Sandra Bullock, Gravity

BAFTA: Female in a Leading Role
Amy Adams, American Hustle
Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
Emma Thompson, Saving Mr Banks
Judi Dench, Philomena
Sandra Bullock, Gravity

Barnaby: Emma Thompson for the BAFTA. Oscar to Judi Dench.
Rebecca: Cate Blanchett for both ceremonies. Her performance in Blue Jasmine has been critically acclaimed and as the SAG award winner it seems like she is a good bet for the win, although the BAFTA may favour a British Actor.

Oscar: Actor in a Supporting Role
Brkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave

BAFTA: Male in a Supporting Role
Barkhad Abdi, Captain Phillips
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Daniel Bruhl, Rush
Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave

Barnaby: Brkhad Abdi in both ceremonies.
Rebecca: Oscar to Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club – he has won all of the awards he has been nominated thus far this awards season. BAFTA to Brkhad Abdi, because his debut performance has been applauded since its release.

Oscar: Actress in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
June Squibb, Nebraska
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave

BAFTA: Female in a Supporting Role
Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
Julia Roberts, August: Osage County
Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Oprah Winfrey, The Butler
Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine

Barnaby: Lupita Nyong’o in both ceremonies.
Rebecca: Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave in both ceremonies, given that she won the SAG award in 2014, but the award may well go to darling of the moment, Jennifer Lawrence for her performance in American Hustle.

Oscar: Animated Feature Film
The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Frozen
The Wind Rises
Ernest & Celestine

BAFTA Animated Feature Film
Frozen
Despicable Me 2
Monsters University

Barnaby: Frozen for both ceremonies
Rebecca: Frozen for both ceremonies

12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen
American Hustle, David O. Russell
Captain Phillips, Paul Greengrass
Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron
The Wolf of Wall Street, Martin Scorsese

Barnaby: Paul Greengrass for the BAFTA. Martin Scorsese the Oscar.
Rebecca:Alfonso Curaron for Gravity for both awards – the technical aspects of the film have been critically applauded, if the script was a little wooden at times, although the Academy may favour Scorsese.

The Grandmaster, Philippe Le Sourd
Gravity, Emmanuel Lubezki
Inside Llewyn Davis, Bruno Delbonnel
Nebraska, Phedon Papamichael
Prisoners, Roger A Deakins

BAFTA Cinemtography
12 Years a Slave

The Great Beauty (Italy)
The Hunt (Denmark)
The Missing Picture (Cambodia)

BAFTA: Foreign Film:
The Act of Killing
Blue is the Warmest Colour
The Great Beauty
Metro Manlia
Wadjda

Barnaby: Oscar to The Hunt. BAFTA to Blue is the Warmest Colour.
Rebecca: One of the harder categories to predict, but I agree that the Oscar will probably go to The Hunt, but I think the BAFTA will go to The Act of Killing

Oscar Music – Original Score
The Book Thief, John Williams
Gravity, Steven Price
Her, William Butler and Owen Pallet
Philomena, Alexandre Desplat
Saving Mr Banks, Thomas Newman

BAFTA Music – Original Score
12 Years a Slave
The Book Thief
Captain Phillips
Gravity
Saving Mr Banks

Barnaby: BAFTA to 12 Years a Slave. Oscar to Philomena.
Rebecca: I think that the Oscar will go to Philomena, for Desplat’s fantastic score, whil the BAFTA may well go to The Book Thief.

Oscar Music – Original Song
‘Alone Yet Not Alone’ from Alone Yet Not Alone
‘Happy’ from Despicable Me 2
‘Let it Go’ from Frozen
‘The Moon Song’ from Her
‘Ordinary Love’ from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Rebecca: ‘Let It Go’ from Frozen, and I for one can’t wait for Idina Menzel’s performance at the ceremony.

Oscar Production Design
American Hustle
Gravity
The Great Gatsby
Her
12 Years a Slave

BAFTA Production Design
12 Years a Slave
American Hustle
Behind the Candelabra
Gravity
The Great Gatsby

Barnaby: The Great Gatsby for both ceremonies.
Rebecca: With Gatsby’s rich design and beautiful recreation of the 1920’s, it certainly seems to be the pinned on winner.

Visual Effects
Gravity
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug
Iron Man 3
The Lone Ranger
Star Trek Into Darkness

BAFTA visual Effects
Gravity
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Iron Man 3
Pacific Rim
Star Trek Into Darkness

Barnaby: Gravity for both ceremonies.
Rebecca: As much as I would love a fantasy like The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, or Star Trek Into Darkness to win, I think that it is going to be Gravity for both ceremonies.

Oscar: Writing – Adapted Screenplay
Before Midnight
Captain Philips
Philomena
12 Years a Slave
The Wolf of Wall Street

BAFTA Adapted Screenplay
12 Years a Slave
Behind the Candelabra
Captain Phillips
Philomena
The Wolf of Wall Street

Barnaby: Philomena in both categories.
Rebecca: If Scorsese misses the Oscar nod in directing, then I think the screenplay award will go to The Wolf of Wall Street. I think the BAFTA will go to 12 Years A Slave.

Dallas Buyers Club
Her
