Share the Sound festival, run by University of Southampton music students, took place on 10-11 March. The festival showcases up and coming local talent and I was able to have a chat with a few of the acts just before the festival began. In this interview, I caught up with singer-songwriter Charlie Hawkins, who released an EP, ‘I’m Here’, last year and has recently formed a band, called ChaWk.
What got you into music in the first place?
I really don’t know – I’ve been singing ever since I was tiny, been playing guitar since I was, like 7. My house was just full of music, like just playing it all the time, so yeah I did that forever
What instruments do you play?
I play electric guitar and I sing. I dabble at the piano as well, or try to!
Can you tell me a bit about ChaWk?
They’re this new band that I started last year and it was sort of an outlet for the songs that I write. I hear a lot of stuff in my head that I want to do, but I wasn’t able to do it, like on my own
So how many are part of ChaWk?
There’s 4 of us in total – a bass player, lead guitarist/keyboard player, the drummer, and then me
What’s been the most exciting part of being a musician so far
Releasing my EP,’I’m Here’, was pretty exciting, and I’d say also making videos for my music on my Youtube channel
Have you got any exciting plans for the immediate future, Charlie, with your music?
Not in the immediate future, but like more gigs coming up around Southampton. I’m hoping to record another EP as well, but that’s sort of very much ideas at the moment, throwing it around, rather than a concrete date
What do you like to get up to that’s non-music related?
Non-music related…oh wow, that’s really difficult! Um, I like cooking so I do a lot of that and going to watch films with my mates
Is there any particular genre of film that you like?
No, not really. This week I watched Ex Machina on Netflix and that was insane and I went to a pre-screening of Get Out, which was like a thriller and was really creepy. I watch rom-coms and all types of sh*t
Charlie Hawkins’ EP ‘I’m Here’ is available now.
