Former Disney star, Selena Gomez, has been forced to cancel two shows at the end of September in Russia, as she has been refused a visa. The shows were scheduled to be played in St Petersburg Ice Palace on 23rd September and Moscow’s Olimiisky stadium on the 25th, as part of the European leg of her Stars Dance tour. An additional show in Kiev, Ukraine, has also been cancelled.
The refusal to give Gomez a visa has been attributed to her stance on gay rights, an issue which has placed Russia in the spotlight after they passed controversial anti-gay laws earlier this year. The ‘Come and Get It‘ star has not commented on the decision on her twitter page, instead posting about her next show in Dubai.
Gomez has not been the only celebrity to come under fire in Russia over their gay rights stance – Madonna was sued by conservative Russian activists in 2012 after they claimed that she was promoting homosexuality to children.
