Actor Simon Pegg, who plays engineer Scotty in the franchise, is co-writing the third film in the rebooted Star Trek series.
The film, still set for a 2016 release, was rumoured to be set back after loss of its writer and director Roberto Orci last month. Subsequently, however, Fast & Furious director Justin Lin was hired to direct. Orci himself was hired to the project when the director of the series’ first two instalments, J.J. Abrams, left to direct Disney’s upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The film is also being co-written with Doug Jung, who wrote for the TV series Banshee.
Pegg has previously written for the ‘Cornetto Trilogy’ of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, in which he starred.
It is unclear if Jung and Pegg are altering material previously written by Orci and other writers, or working on an entirely new script.
