On Friday 24th April, one of the most iconic villains in the comic book universe turned 75. To celebrate this landmark, director of the upcoming Suicide Squad, David Ayer shared a picture on his Twitter account of Jared Leto’s version of the Joker.
This image of Leto is rather different to the ones we’ve becoming use to seeing: the long-haired ombre goddess in unconventional suits and ties collecting awards for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club. About a month ago, Leto bleached his hair and eyebrows blonde in preparation for the role.
It seems that Leto is taking a new and unique approach to the Joker as there is no iconic purple suit and obvious face paint that Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger both wore in there portrayals of the Joker. Instead, what remains is one lone purple glove which can be seen grabbing the shocking turf of green hair that has become synomous with the Joker. The shirtless Leto is covered in devilish tattoos including playing cards, his maniacal smile as well as a tear drop tattoo underneath the eye which signifies murder.
The reveal of the picture may not be what you expected for the new Joker to look like but Ayer and Leto’s collaboration of the character seems to be the most maniacal and intriguing yet with ‘damaged’ tattooed on his forehead and steel-capped teeth.
Still yet to be revealed is Will Smith’s Deadshot, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress.
Suicide Squad is expected to be released in cinemas on 5th August 2016.
