Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart have reunited for action-comedy American Ultra, six years after they first appeared onscreen together in the 2009 comedy-drama Adventureland.
This weed-filled adventure has a similar feel to Adventureland but with the addition of several violent murders and much more swearing.
Eisenberg plays a shaggy-haired stoner called Mike Howell, who is trying to propose to his girlfriend Phoebe (Stewart) when agents from the government suddenly storm in, intent on reawakening the trained killer within him that has been put to sleep and forgotten his past life.
This buzzkill soon turns into actual kills, when the government decide that Mike has become a liability and must be terminated. In order to survive, Mike is forced to defend himself from stray bullets, car bombs and fist fights – all whilst trying to save Phoebe from the enemy’s grasp.
The film’s cast also includes Topher Grace (Interstellar) as the leader of the government agency set to kill Mike and Connie Britton (American Horror Story) who plays a veteran agent that helps Mike in rescuing Phoebe.
Written by Max Landis (Chronicle) and directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X), American Ultra seems strikingly similar to some of Eisenberg’s previous works such as Zombieland. It is also refreshing to see Stewart re-try her hand at comedy after appearing in several dramas, post-Twilight.
American Ultra hits theatres on 21st August 2015.
