It was confirmed on Thursday (29th June) that the third film in the Star Trek franchise will be called Star Trek Beyond.
The news came from the film’s director Justin Lin (of the Fast & Furious franchise) via twitter. Lin is taking over from J.J Abrams, who is now serving as a producer on the film.
Lin also shared the first photo from the set – a close-up of the Starfleet badge from a cadet’s uniform – indicating that production is well on its way.
Very few details have been revealed about Star Trek Beyond other than that it will follow the USS Enterprise on their five-year mission in space.
Simon Pegg and Doug Jung have scripted the film, which brings back the entire main cast including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, and of course, Pegg himself as Scotty.
In addition, it has also been reported that Idris Elba has joined the cast as an unknown villain. Star Trek Beyond is set to be released next year.
