An official trailer for Marielle Heller’s upcoming comedy-drama, The Diary of a Teenage Girl has been released.
Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Phoebe Gloeckner, the film centres on aspiring cartoonist, Minnie, as she navigates all the perks and pitfalls of being a teenager in 1970s’ San Francisco.
As the trailer suggests, Minnie is also a girl exploring her own promiscuity – experimenting with sex, drugs and everything in between. And in the same vein as Juno and Ghost World, Minnie has a very distinctive teenage voice – narrating her most intimate experiences through a series of recordings, cartoons and diary entries.
Bel Powley, who plays Minnie, is probably best known for her role as Daisy Miller in the CBBC series M.I High. Though this film is likely to act as her big-screen breakthrough, Powley also recently appeared as Princess Margaret in A Royal Night Out.
The film, which was first screened at the 2015 Sundance festival, also stars Kristen Wiig as Minnie’s mother, Charlotte and Alexander Skarsgard as her rugged flame, Monroe.
The Diary of a Teenage Girl is set to be released on 7th August. Watch the trailer below.
