Chloe Grace Moretz is set to play the title character in Working Titles and Universal’s live action retelling of The Little Mermaid.
Not much is known about the script and how it will differ from Hans Christian Andersen’s original fable or Disney’s beloved 1989 animated version. The well-known fairytale tells the story of a 16 year old mermaid who wishes to become a human after falling in love with a Prince.
Earlier in the year, Sofia Coppola was attached to direct the film but left after ‘creative difference with the studios.’ Variety has cited Moretz’ casting as one of the reasons for Coppola’s departure from the project.
Though the film has yet to find a new director, Richard Curtis – the screenwriter of Love Actually and About Time – is in talks to pen a new script for the film.
Over the years there have been several adaptations of Anderson’s fairytale, but perhaps the most treasured version is Disney’s 1989 animation. Remind yourself of the under-water magic of Disney’s film below.
