In a special Nintendo Direct announcement, it has been revealed that the original Pokémon games – Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow– will be re-released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Europe, Japan and North America next year.
First released in 1996, the re-release is set to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the games’ initial release in Japan. The games marked the beginning of a multi-billion dollar franchise and have collectively sold millions of copies worldwide.
In the 2009 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records the games were rated as the “Best selling RPG on the Game Boy” and “Best selling RPG of all time.”
The first 151 Pokémon, including Missingno and Mew will be available for gameplay, and all three games will have exactly the same graphics and formats, the only difference being that they will have wireless multi-player trading and battling capabilities.
Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow will be re-released on 27th February 2016. Watch the trailer for Pokémon Go! – the upcoming mobile app – below.
