The nominations for the 31st annual Independent Spirit Awards nominations were announced last night (24th November), with mostly predictable results spiced up by a few genuine surprises.

Carol – Todd Hayne’s first feature since 2007’s I’m Not There – leads the pack with six nominations, including best feature, director, screenplay and cinematography, in addition to landing two slots in the category for best female lead. Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation and Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight follow close behind, with five nominations each.

Meanwhile, Sean Baker’s Tangerine – which was shot entirely on smartphones before being edited on Final Cut Pro and Da Vinci Resolve – is up for four major awards, in the rare case of an actual independent movie being nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.

Notable omissions include Alex Ross Perry’s Queen of Earth, Woody Allen’s Irrational Man, Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York, and Joel Potrykus’ Buzzard.

The full list of nominees can be found on the Independent Spirit Awards website.

The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday 27th February 2016.
