According to reports, a Deadpool sequel has already been greenlit by 20th Century Fox.
It might not officially be out worldwide until this weekend, but Fox seem confident that Deadpool will be a huge hit, and considering I was lucky enough to go to Union Films’ midnight screening of the film, I can almost guarantee that this will be the outcome. With returns of $65 million expected on just the opening weekend, it comes as no surprise that Fox are already planning on milking the cash cow that is the “merc with the mouth” to the absolute maximum.
As a result, Fox are already planning ‘Deadpool 2’ with the intent to keep the same team together, meaning that writers Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick are going to be spinning out more crude, rude and violent moments on scene for our titular fourth-wall-breaking anti-hero played by Ryan Reynolds. The Hollywood Reporter has also suggested that director Tim Miller is also being re-drafted in.
Considering that Reynolds and Miller both campaigned hard over the last few years to get the first film made, it is almost certain that both will be back- one simply needs to look at the advertising campaign for Deadpool (which cost more than the actual production- not that you would realise it) to see how much Reynolds has grown to embody the character, since he first played the role in the less successful X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Considering it has only just come out in the UK, it would be unfair to start to speculate exactly what such a sequel will entail, but one thing is for sure: Wade Wilson, his red spandex and his katanas are very much alive and kicking.
