Brie Larson, who won an Oscar for her role in Room has been confirmed as Captain Marvel.
The actress, who was reportedly favourite for the role has today been officially unveiled during the Marvel Hall panel at the San Diego Comic Con. This marks the first time that a woman has been the lead role in a Marvel film.
Larson herself later tweeted the news saying: “Call me Captain Marvel.” Although some comic fans questioned the choice of a female playing the role, Marvel Executive Kevin Feige quickly shut them down, stating: “Captain Marvel has gone by many names in the comics, has had many people who’ve inhabited that costume and used that power base. I want to make it very clear: This hero’s name is Carol Danvers.”
Feige had previously discussed this version of the role as being one that would: “straddle two worlds. Her origins are very much Earthbound, but her adventures and power base come from the cosmic realm.” Today, we now know the ‘her’ in question will be Larson, who has also previously had roles in Short Term 12 and 21 Jump Street.
Captain Marvel is set to be released March 2019. Watch discussion and some reaction to this news below:
