Rihanna and Anne Hathaway are the latest to join the all-female reboot of Ocean’s Eleven.
The heist film, to be entitled Ocean’s Eight, has already cast Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett. Actresses reportedly close to signing on to the crime comedy include Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and rapper and actor Awkwafina. These signings would – theoretically – leave one lead role still to be filled.
The film is set to be directed by Gary Ross, known for Seabiscuit, and his recent work The Hunger Games. Producer Steven Soderbergh worked on the 2001 Ocean‘s film, which starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Don Cheadle, among others. This all-female spin-off is, of course, not the first time the franchise has been rejuvenated – the 2001 caper was itself a remake of the Rat Pack’s 1960 original of the same name.
Ross recently stated that the film is: “very much an extension and a continuation” of the original, and that he is “thrilled and honoured” to be working on the project.
Though she asserted that she is not yet formally associated with the project, Bonham Carter assured Entertainment Weekly in June that the script is: “a great script, and it’s great for women. Just hilarious.”
