The live-action adaptation of Disney’s The Little Mermaid seems to be a definite go-ahead now, and it seems to have pulled In the Heights and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda on board to be a part of its creative team.
Teaming up with the infamous composer, Alan Menken, Miranda will help pen the music and songs for the new version of the film, as well as serve alongside Marc Platt as a producer. Menken originally penned the song’s alongside the late Howard Ashman; a team that served Disney well over the years, especially during the company’s ‘renaissance period’ of films.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, whose name has recently garnered much attention due to the phenomenal success of the musical Hamilton, has already written music for Disney. Notably, their upcoming animated feature Moana is set to prominently feature his songwriting. He has shown passion for this new project having previously stated that The Little Mermaid: “was the movie probably most responsible for me being here.”
The Little Mermaid is one of many upcoming live-action remakes of Disney classics. From Beauty and the Beast to Tink to Cruella to Dumbo to Pete’s Dragon (which is out now), Disney are doing all they can to continue dominating the industry. As well as these live-action reboots, the company continues to release original feature length animations too.
