Disney have officially announced that they are going ahead with a live action Lion King movie, with Jungle Book (2016) director Jon Favreau set to direct the movie.
Favreau teased the project on his Twitter page before Disney officially confirmed the news themselves. However it has been confirmed that the film will feature the iconic music from the original film, famously penned by Sir Elton John and Tim Rice.
Perhaps the most well-known and universally beloved film of their renaissance era, Disney’s original 1994 film is often heralded as an animation masterpiece and has grossed over $960 million worldwide during its various cinematic runs. It now joins the likes of Alice in Wonderland, Pete’s Dragon and Beauty and the Beast in being dealt with the live action treatment from the company, however no release date has been set for the project and no further casting or scripting details have been released. In the meantime Favreau will serve as executive producer for Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel set for release in 2018 and 2019 respectively, and Disney will be releasing a live action remake of Beauty and the Beast on March 17th 2017.
