Sony Pictures have announced that Shawn Levy will direct their film adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hugely popular Uncharted video game franchise.
One of the most critically acclaimed gaming franchises of all time, the Uncharted video game series chronicles the adventures of treasure hunter Nathan Drake, and his globe-trotting escapades to uncover some of the most famous treasures in history. The project has floated around Sony for a while with other names such as David O. Russell and Seth Gordon attached to direct at various points.
Levy is perhaps best known for his work as director of the Night at the Museum trilogy, which starred Ben Stiller and lasted from 2006-2014, with the trilogy grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. On top of this, Levy has directed a number of other films including Date Night, Real Steel and This Is Where I Leave You, and this past year served as executive producer and director for the hit Netflix show Stranger Things.
No release date has been announced for the film and it is unclear whether it will be a direct adaptation of the first game, Uncharted: Drakes’s Fortune, or an entirely original story, the latest screenplay has been penned by Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, The Grey).
