I think its safe to say that Selena Gomez’s image has had a clear transition from her innocent, sugary-sweet days as a Disney star. We first got a glimpse of her wild side in teen movie Spring Breakers, and latest single, ‘Come and get it,’ provokes a more ‘adult’ image of Selena.
The song is driven by a spicy concoction of rhythmic beats with a hint of Bollywood. Brought in at the verses, it gives the song a flavoursome edge but the chorus’ bland electro-synth dissatisfies. Despite this, with such a catchy hook line, there is a warning that the copious “na na na na”’s will be stuck in your head for days!
The lyrics are pretty unimaginative, yet the sexual references “I’m not too shy to show I love you, I got no regrets” emphasise the ‘adultness’ of the single. Unfortunately Selena’s voice doesn’t really enhance the monotone vocals, which leaves me with the inclination that this song is perhaps better suited to Rihanna (the original target for the track).
All in all though, ‘Come and get it’ is a catchy, pulsing track worth listening to, even if this is whilst grinding in a nightclub.
