This Week in Records

As the last week of term closes in on us, the music industry doesn’t really have a lot to offer us. Following the massive recent releases from Coldplay and Adele, this week brings with it the latest from The Weeknd, and a smattering of albums.

R Kelly has put the keys in the ignition and will be releasing his thirteenth studio album, The Buffet, this week. With guest appearances from the likes of Lil Wayne, Jhene Aiko and Wizkid, this is set to be an eclectic listening experience and hopefully a good one. Out Via RCA Records.

Jennylee, with only one song on Spotify, is releasing her new album Right On this week. As the bassist of American indie rock band Warpaint, Jennylee has started to release solo music sounding similar, but with her own twist spanning from new wave to gothic rock. Out via Rough Trade.

Soulful brit songstress, Mahalia is bringing her edgy voice to music with her latest EP Never Change. At only 17, Mahalia proves through her lyrics that she is wise beyond her years. Having already opened for artists including Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sande, she is certainly one to watch. Out Via Mahalia Music.

‘In The Light’ is the latest single to spring from The Weeknd’s Number 1 album, Beauty Behind The Madness. The track’s opening is brooding, before is descends into the more upbeat tone that makes up half of his album, but keeping an unhurried pace and well placed lyrics. Out via The Weeknd XO.

Hurts are bringing the next track from their third album, Surrender‘Wings’ opens with softly spoken words, that are joined by a wistful melody as the track begins to grow with gentle synth work. Accompanying it is an artful video detailing relationships and friends, with an uplifting (“wrap your wings around my body”) at the chorus. Out via Major Label Limited.

Up next is a house remix by 99 Souls, featuring Destiny’s Child and Brandy, of ‘The Girl Is Mine’. It marries the nostalgia of hearing Destiny’s Child and Brandy, with an upbeat tempo to get hearts racing. Out via Resilience Records.
