Released on 24th September 1991, Nirvana’s legendary second studio album, Nevermind, is 23 years old today.
The album reached number one in several countries, including the US and Canada, and entered the top five in a number of others. Since its release, Nevermind has achieved diamond certification in France, Canada, and the US, where it has sold over a staggering 10 million units.
Nirvana shot to fame with the album’s lead single, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, which became the band’s most successful song. Nevermind also featured the singles ‘In Bloom’, ‘Lithium’, and ‘Come As You Are’.
After Nevermind, Nirvana released their third and final studio album, In Utero, in 1993. Whilst the album reached number one in both the US and UK album charts and received acclaim from critics, it didn’t match the success of Nevermind.
Nirvana performed their last concert on 1st March 1994 in Munich, Germany, just over a month before Kurt Cobain’s body was discovered at his home in Seattle. In 2005, as a tribute to the deceased frontman, a sign was put up in Cobain’s hometown in Washington, that reads, “Welcome to Aberdeen: Come As You Are”.
