She’s been building slowly with previous releases including ‘City Lights’ and ‘Ride or Die’ and now the 17 year old south London starlet A*M*E (Real name Amy Kabba) has produced her best single yet.
Having previously supported Rizzle Kicks, Olly Murs, Jessie J, JLS and The Wanted, it’s clear that A*M*E is doing all the right things in music, and maybe this will be the track which launches her into the limelight. Distorted, synthy keyboards accompany A*M*E’s punchy voice. 90s throw backs are in abundance, not only in the ‘game boy’ reference but the glitchy keyboard and bubblegum pop. Sadly the track isn’t really about an actual Gameboy, but more about guys ‘playing the game’ to pull her, a comical link to the book The Game, perhaps.
The message is rather generic, as she sings “Dance all night, you can meet me on the floor”, and maybe the chorus isn’t as imaginative as it could be as she repeats “Play the game boy / play the game game boy”, but this really is a great pop song. It embodies everything that pop should be about. Upbeat, danceable, fun, a little bit cheeky, and catchy.
This is some big pop music.

‘Play The Game Boy’ by A*M*E will be released in the UK on November 5th 2012
