Bruno Mars’ latest offering, ‘Treasure’ is quite frankly a disappointment. While I don’t claim to be a “Hooligan” (Bruno Mars superfan), I must admit that most of his previous releases have been entertaining, if not enjoyable. ‘Treasure’ is simply inoffensive. It lacks the excitement and drive of his former hits, such as ‘Grenade’ or the more recent ‘Locked Out of Heaven’, and doesn’t even have the sickly-sweet sentiment of songs such as ‘Just the Way You Are’ or ‘Nothin’ On You’ to recover it.
This poor attempt at replicating ’70s funk has been done so many times before, and to a far better standard too. Mars seems to have forgotten how to make a catchy hit with ‘Treasure’, and I can’t help but feel that this should have been left on his album, Unorthodox Jukebox, where the rest of the public were spared from it.
Better luck next time, Bruno.
