Marika Hackman is undoubtedly one of the most melancholic artists to gain a semblance of prominence in 2013. Her voice on seven track mini-album That Iron Taste – released in February – tugged at heart strings and showcased a wistful talent in the young songstress. Now she is gearing up to put out her Sugar Blind EP, and having already unveiled ‘Cinnamon‘, has premiered another new track from this forthcoming release, ‘Itchy Teeth’.
Quietly foreboding chords and a softly strummed guitar accompany Hackman’s haunting voice as she requests for someone to ‘hold me for an hour’. Her songwriting ability shines through with a doleful vulnerability and a completely believable honesty in her vocals. Throughout the song, other instruments and sounds are intermittently introduced including strings and echoing samples of Hackman’s voice, whilst still retaining a ghostly sparseness.
It’s a peaceful and pensive track, building in the softly hummed middle eight, and is a lullaby which will calm you down in even the most stressful of moments.
Marika Hackman’s Sugar Blind EP is available to preorder now, and will be released on 9th December 2013.
