It’s a collaboration that we could have only dreamed of. Shakira has returned, and not only that, but she’s brought fellow pop heavyweight Rihanna along with her.
Admittedly, ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You’ is not as instantly lovable as Shakira’s previous collaboration with Beyoncé (remember ‘Beautiful Liar’?), but it will still get plenty of airplay.
This pop packet combines a reggae-style offbeat and bass-line with driving guitars, which could draw comparisons to artists like The Police or Madness.
Vocally, it doesn’t really showcase either of the songstresses’ talents. At times, it’s only Rihanna’s accent which distinguishes her place on the track. Which is disappointing if you were expecting the divas to have a sing-off, but it does place more of our focus on the Columbian singer.
After a few listens, ‘Can’t Remember to Forget You’ begins to grow on you, and you may just find yourself singing along to this alternative love song.
A welcome return for Shakira, and a song worth remembering.
