The second official single lifted from MS MR’s second album, ‘Criminals’ continues the bouncy, catchiness of lead single ‘Painted’, but with a softer hue.
Beginning with the beat of drums, ‘Criminals’ is instantly infectiously delicious with its beat, emphasised further through the breathy vocals of Lizzy Plapinger that are idyllically juxtaposed with the upbeat melody. Although evoking vibrancy, the lyrics ooze with a dark romance which creates both intrigue and melancholy. Although glossed over with a silky pop aura, the track’s content draws parallels with the duo’s troubling debut LP, Secondhand Rapture. The song’s oxymoronic characterisation showcases the band’s ability to place something masterfully heartfelt into a disco sphere, producing something quite captivating. Likely to be the standout track from the album, ‘Criminals’ shows MS MR in all their glory.
