Rock and metal festival Sonisphere will make a comeback in 2014 with co-headliners Iron Maiden and Metallica.

Both bands will headline the festival for the first time, which will return from a two-year hiatus following the cancellation of the 2012 event in March of that year. It has also been confirmed that these will be the only performances in the UK by Iron Maiden and Metallica in 2014.

Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson said: “Without being clichéd, it really is an honour and privilege to return to play there with the purpose of celebrating some of the finest moments in British rock history from inspirational bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Zeppelin, The Stones and Genesis.

“If you are there on the day it is highly likely that you will hear some of these songs played live for the very last time ever. So on an occasion like this, a celebration and the end of a chapter, you can be sure we will do our utmost to give our fans one hell of a show and go out with all guns blazing.”

While Iron Maiden have promised plenty of their ’80s music from their back-catalogue, Metallica are set to deliver an interactive ‘Metallica By Request’ set with songs from throughout their career.

Drummer Lars Ulrich said: “To be invited to co-headline the 40th anniversary celebration at the legendary Knebworth House is truly a mindf**k.”

Sonisphere 2014 will take place from 4th-6th July 2014 in the grounds of Knebworth House, Hertfordshire. Early Bird Weekend tickets are now on sale for £170.
