It was announced this morning that Sampha is #4 in the BBC Sound of 2014. The electronic and soul music producer and singer songwriter was revealed to follow George Ezra (who is at #5) in the countdown this morning on Nick Grimshaw’s Radio 1 breakfast show.
The annual list is voted for by 170 of the UK’s top journalists, broadcasters and tastemakers, and aims to draw attention to some of the most promising new musical acts.
The long list of 15 acts nominated for the prestigious poll was unveiled last month, and featured artists including Ella Eyre, MNEK and Say Lou Lou. Last year Haim won the accolade.
Sampha is one of the more unknown names on the Sound of 2014 longlist; but you’ll definitely recognise his voice from a host of collaborations with the likes of SBTRKT, Jessie Ware and Drake. His current single, ‘Too Much’, is particularly recognisable as it’s used in the Drake single, also titled ‘Too Much’, as the vocal riff.
Sampha was also included the iTunes list of New Artists for 2014.
The winner of BBC’s Sound of 2014 will be announced on Friday morning, again on Nick Grimshaw’s breakfast show.
