A Nightmare on Elm Street, the iconic slasher horror film, was released 30 years ago today in US. It was subsequently premiered in the UK on 16th November of the same year.
Written and directed by Wes Craven, this horror classic contains the creation of one of the most memorable villains, Freddy Kreuger. Set in a small, fictional village, the plot revolves around a group of teenagers, terrorized by the intangible and evil antagonist who stalks them in their dreams and eventally kill them, causing their deaths in the real world as well. Little do they know, their parents turn out to be the members of a desperate lynch mob who caused death of Fred Kreuger, a child murder who avoided legal prosecution. He returns years after for vengeance to claim the lives of his aggressors’ children.
The film has received critical acclaim; the main feature highly praised by the critics was the horror’s mesmerising ability to distort the boundary between the reality and the surreal imagery of the dream world. To this day, despite a significantly less successful remake, A Nightmare of Elm Street remains one of the best horror movies ever made.
