It has been revealed that BBC’s hit drama series, Happy Valley, has been renewed for its second series.

Starring Sarah Lancashire as a feisty, dedicated police woman in a small town, Happy Valley‘s first series – which aired earlier this year – looked at the release of a man who Catherine (Lancashire) thought responsible for her daughter’s death.

The thriller-drama also starred the likes of Tommy Royce, Joe Armstrong, Steve Pemberton, James Norton, Siobhan Finneran and Karl Davies.

Upon its airing, Happy Valley was a huge critical and commercial success, amassing a weekly total audience of eight million. As well as being one of BBC’s most successful dramas of the year, Happy Valley has been picked up by Netflix for the US market and ABC for the Australian market.

Speaking about the series, BBC One controller, Charlotte Moore, spoke with fond words: “The series is testimony to the creative ambition, quality and breadth of original British drama on BBC One and I can’t wait for the second series to return.”

The second series is expected to begin production early next year to then air late 2015. Watch the trailer for the first series below.
