An exciting new production is coming to The Nuffield Theatre this month, led by the vision of The Nuffield’s Director, Samuel Hodges. Hodges is bringing Tennessee William’s fantastic play, The Glass Menagerie to the Southampton stage.
Hodges’ has led the way creatively at the theatre over the course of the last two years, and under his leadership, The Nuffield was voted regional theatre of the year at The Stage Awards 2015. The Glass Menagerie is Hodges’ directorial debut at the Nuffield, features design by Olivier Award winner Ultz, and is written by celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams.
The cast will feature Danny Lee Wynter (Joes’s Palace) playing the protagonist Tom, Belinda Lang (2point4 Children) is cast as Amanda, Pearl Chanda (Arthur & George) features as Laura, and Wilf Scolding (Skins) rounds out the cast as Jim. The play is based on parts of William’s young life, with characters based on himself, his mother, and his sister. The Glass Menagerie focuses on Tom’s recollections of his mother and sister, and explores the themes of self identity, family, and memory.
Hodges commented:”I am thrilled that my Nuffield debut as a director will be the masterpiece The Glass Menagerie. This is one of the finest works from one of the greatest twentieth century dramatists and was his first great Broadway success. It was radical and bold when it was first produced almost 70 years ago, a quality which it retains uniquely to this day, making it a perfect fit for the work we are creating at Nuffield.”
The Glass Menagerie is at The Nuffield Theatre from 9 – 31 October 2015. For more information go to www.nuffieldtheatre.co.uk
