The Kooks are a rock band from Brighton who formed back in 2004. They are mainly influenced by the 1960s British Invasion movement and post-punk revival of the millennium. They have however experimented in rock, Britpop, ska, and, more recently, funk and hip-hop.
Three months after forming, they signed to Virgin Records. Their debut album Inside In/Inside Out was released in 2006 and achieved quadruple platinum status in the UK within a year, platinum certification in Australia and two times in Ireland. They won awards, such as Best UK and Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006, and a Brit Awards nomination for ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’.
Their inspiration to form a band came when looking for clothes in Primark; they had a vision on how they wanted the band to look so bought some clothes and hats. A shared love of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones brought the band together, as well as the guise of a school music project.
They are touring throughout 2016, including York’s Barbican on the 20th January, Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom on the 22nd January, and Southampton’s O2 Guildhall five days later on the 27th.
Tickets for The Kooks’ show at the O2 Guildhall in Southampton have now all sold out.
