Judith Kerr’s beloved feline character, Mog, has come to life in Sainsbury’s new festive advert.
Narrated by Emma Thompson, Mog’s Christmas Calamity follows the cat – who first captured readers’ hearts in 1970 – as she accidentally causes chaos on Christmas Eve in the Thomas household.
The story, specially written by the 92 year old author, follows an It’s A Wonderful Life kind of narrative, as festive Mog-induced disasters are eventually revived by the kindness of neighbours – echoing the retailer’s heart-warming message that “Christmas is for sharing.”
To accompany the advert, Sainsbury’s will be selling Kerr’s original story – complete with the author’s traditionally charming illustrations – as well as a soft plush toy of Mog herself. A proportion of the proceeds for both products will go directly to Save The Children’s current initiative to improve child literacy in the UK.
