Downton Abbey is a fantastic period programme with lashings of drama, intrigue and historical detail. Spanning the tumult of pre world war one and leading through into the glamorous 1920s, the programme follows Lord Grantham, played by Hugh Bonneville, his American wife and their three daughters as they navigate the pre war era.
One of the highlights of the show is undoubtedly the head butler Carson, who has the richest voice on television. His attention to detail, and dedication to the social status quo combines with a rarely seen tenderness towards the family create a very engaging character. Other cast members are outstanding and create well loved characters.
Costume dramas are elaborate, with beautiful period pieces, making them perfect for Blu-ray release due to the beauty in the costumes, sets and locations. Downton is filmed on location at Highclere Castle, which is gorgeous, and the sweeping panoramic views of it are stunning in HD. Those who want to have the new series (which is currently airing on ITV) on their shelves straight away, you’ll be please to know Universal are releasing an expanded boxset to include Series 4 and last year’s Christmas special.
