Two Mexican-American sisters (Alex Vega and Camilla Belle) who have lost their mother suddenly become orphans when their father dies. They have lived comfortably all their lives in a beautiful mansion, but it turns out their dad was in debt and they have no choice but let the house go. They move to a dodgy end of LA and adjust their way of live to suit their new economic situation.
The plot is a reworking of Jane Austen’s Sense & Sensibility. It doesn’t really have anything to say about Austen, nor does it bother to retain her sense of irony, humour and acute social observation. In fact, closest this film gets to social observation is a series of jokes about illegal immigrants and the snobbery of rich people. The words uninspired and lazy come to mind.
