The late Anthony Minghella directed many wonderful films, but this is probably my favourite. It’s based on a Patricia Highsmith novel – a cold, compelling book – and turns it into a sumptuously filmed and intelligent character study of a man with a talent for pretending to be people he is not.
Matt Damon is terrific in the title role, but for me the real highlight is Jude Law, fantastically charismatic as a rich narcissist befriended by the dangerous Tom Ripley.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), directed by Anthony Minghella, is released on blu-ray disc and DVD in the UK by Studio Canal, Certificate 15.
