Now officially an annual event, the Metal Hammer-sponsored Defenders of the Faith tour kicks off in Southampton on the first of December. With a mixture of old and new metal acts, there’s something for every headbanger this year.
Solely flying the flag for British metal are newcomers Rise to Remain, while the mysterious Ghost bring their catchy King Diamond-indebted rock ‘n’ roll and theatrical stage presence on their first proper UK tour. Both are hotly tipped as bands to watch by the heavy music press, with their recent albums generating considerable critical acclaim.
Sure to steal the show are Swedish legends In Flames. One of the biggest names to come from the immensely influential Gothenburg death metal scene, they have reinvented themselves in the 21st century as a jack-of-all-trades heavy act. Headlining are American thrashers Trivium, who with their fifth album In Waves are looking to continue their transition from hungry newcomers to one of the defining modern metal bands.
