Ben Affleck will star alongside Superman star Henry Cavill as Batman in the sequel to Man of Steel in 2015.
Earlier this year director Zach Snyder told audiences at San Diego Comic Con that DC’s two most popular superheroes would meet in the next film, prompting much speculation about who would be the next man to take on the iconic role. Warner Brothers announced that the star and director of the Oscar winning Argo will don the cowl of Batman in the first film which sees the two characters face to face.
Affleck, 41, will join Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane in the as yet untitled sequel, which has a premier date of July 17th 2015. His incarnation of Batman follows after the incredibly successful Dark Knight trilogy, which featured Christian Bale in the title role.
Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise made £417m in the international box office, making a sequel almost inevitable in the current superhero boom. It appears that Warner Brothers want to try and capture the magic that propelled Avengers Assemble to box office success, ahead of the scheduled Justice League movie in 2017, in which Batman and Superman should surely be central characters.
Affleck is no stranger to superhero roles – in 2003 he played the central character in Daredevil.
