Rumours have been circulating for a while now about the shortlist for Peter Parker – yes, not Miles Morales unfortunately – and now it looks like Marvel have settled on one. It is being reported that Asa Butterfield, of x+y and Ender’s Game fame, has entered final talks to be the next Peter Parker.
It had come down to two young British actors: Tom Holland and Butterfield. It’s expected that Marvel will make the announcement as soon as possible, once all the formalities have been completed.
Given that Spider-Man is going to debut in next summer’s Captain America: Civil War, which has just began filming, this will have to happen soon.
Butterfield has proven himself to be a very talented young actor in the past, and his distinctively young appearance will make a great contrast not just to the two previous live-action Peter Parkers, but also to the rest of the Marvel Studios roster. It’s a very exciting prospect, being able to see Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) onscreen next to the much younger, but maybe equally intelligent and witty teenage webslinger.
Captain America: Civil War is released on 29th April 2016.

Why another white teenage boy!?! I’m disappointed that Marvel didn’t go the Miles Morales route, or at least cast a spider-man not in high school/college
I would have been over the moon if it was Miles Morales, or even a Peter Parker who happened to be black. As it is, I actually love the high school route. It’ll make such a great contrast to the rest, and we’ve yet to see a Peter Parker who actually is/looks like a teenager.
