Al Jean, the producer of one of the biggest cartoon franchises in history, The Simpsons, has revealed that show favourites Homer and Marge Simpson will “legally separate” in the upcoming season premiere.
He said: “In the premiere, it’s discovered after all these years, Homer has narcolepsy and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage. Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham. We’ll have cameos from the other women from Girls.”
Jean failed to reveal how long the separation of two of the most iconic characters in history would last, but fans have been guessing that it won’t be too long before they are reunited again, given the show’s history.
He has also revealed some of the other upcoming plot points. Over the past weekend, Jean has announced that Bart Simpson’s nemesis, Sideshow Bob (voiced by Kelsey Grammar) would finally get the better of the young boy and manage to kill him. The death will be part of the annual non-canon Halloween special, meaning that it will not affect the rest of the season.
The news of all these twists and turns comes after Harry Shearer – the voice behind several iconic characters including Mr Burns, Ned Flanders and Principle Skinner – quit the show back in May.
The Simpsons will return for it’s 27th season on US broadcaster Fox in September.
