According to Tracking Board, a second sequel to the much-loved 2001 film, The Princess Diaries, could well be on the way. Disney are reportedly working on a third film, based on Meg Cabot’s hugely popular book series of the same name.
The first film acted as a star vehicle for Anne Hathaway, who played the role of Mia Thermopolis – an awkward teenager who suddenly discovers that she is the princess and heir to the Kingdom of Genovia; a fictional country that is presided over by her grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews). A sequel was made in 2004, which saw Mia fall for a charming but devilish young lord, played by Chris Pine.
It is uncertain whether Hathaway will reprise the role, as she has since gone on to bigger and better things – appearing in blockbusters such as The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar. She also won an Oscar for her performance as Fantine in the 2012 musical, Les Misérables.
Even if Hathaway passes, the film is still set to go ahead, albeit with different characters/actors. Debra Chase – one of the producers behind the first two films – is expected to direct.
