The first trailer for the third instalment of the rebooted Star Trek film franchise has been revealed.
It’s very easy to forget that there is a new Star Trek film coming out, what with J.J. Abrams upcoming foray into the biggest sci-fi franchise of the moment (and arguably of the last 35 years), Star Wars. And after his disappointing work on Star Trek Into Darkness, who could blame us for forgetting about the new one? Yet come it does, and today
(Monday 14th December), the new trailer dropped online ahead of it’s expected debut later this week, in theatres screening Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Although specific details of the film’s plot have yet to be announced, the trailer suggests that Star Trek Beyond will see the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise crash land on a strange new planet out on the frontier. Faced with new alien societies, hostile lifeforms, the magnetic and intimidating voice of Idris Elba, and no sign of being able to play the Beastie Boys in atmosphere, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Lieutenant Spock (Zachary Quinto) must unite the crew to survive.
From the opening strains of Sabotage (a call back to J.J.’s first Star Trek), the weird robot-sounding white face/black stripes alien girl, the new teleport beam style, and the prospect of a completely alien world, this looks like real, original-series-style Star Trek.
With a cast that includes Kingsman‘s Sofia Boutella, a script co-written by Simon Pegg (who also returns as Scotty), and self-confessed Trekkie, Justin Lin (Fast and Furious 5) in the director’s chair, this looks very exciting indeed.
Star Trek Beyond is set to hit UK cinemas on 22nd July 2016. Watch the trailer below.
