University of Southampton graduate and former SUSUtv member, Amy Ashenden has finally launched her new documentary, The Gay Word.

The documentary follows Amy as she travels around the South of England to assess the usage of the word ‘gay’ in modern society and whether or not it carries a homophobic message.

The documentary, which also questions how language has evolved, has already received positive attention from both the media and the LGBT community – with notable praisers including BBC Three documentary presenter, Stacey Dooley and leading gay rights organisation, Stonewall.

Speaking of the documentary and her hopes for how viewers will receive it, Amy told The Edge:

“I began the project hoping to keep an open mind and better understand the issue from all perspectives. And I hope that’s reflected in the documentary by people of any sexuality feeling that they can watch and relate to it. I’ve learnt that opinion isn’t always divided in the ways we might think and I hope the film will be a tool to bridge the gap between people who find it offensive and those who see it as detached from sexual identity.”

For more information on the project, you can follow the documentary on Facebook and Twitter or visit the website.
